There are several versions of FireWire connectors, both a 4 and a 6 pole in the plain. IEEE1394 Type A standard that can transfer data at up to 400 Mbps and the newer FireWire 800 cables - IEEE 1394 Type B, which can transmit 800 Mbps. These standards are compatible with each other and the main difference between plain. FireWire and FireWire 800 is the transmission rate, therefore will obviously not be able to transfer faster than the lowest common denominator.

High-speed communications

FireWire is a standard for high-speed communication between PC 'is and peripherals that require high speeds. The standard serial port is doing in most cases only up to 115 Kbit / s. USB1.1 bus doing the best cases up to 12 Mbit / s and up to 480 Mbit / s bandwidth with USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed). Only USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) is basically fast enough example. video editing, but - even more important - USB data is transmitted through the PC's CPU where FireWire wire data bypassing the CPU. Therefore FireWire far more stable in practical use when you require continuous and fast data transfers.

2 standards

FireWire comprises 2 standards; IEEE1394a with 400 Mbps transfer and IEEE1394b with 800 Mbps transfer. FireWire uses a 4, 6 or 9 pin cable that resembles a USB cable. Danbit is of course able to deliver multiple interfaces for FireWire.

  • High speed up to 800 Mbit / s
  • "Plug Play" installation of devices on the bus with "Hot swap "support
  • Using 4, 6 or 9 pin connector with 4 data conductors (2 twisted pairs).
  • In IEEE1394b is twisted a second conductor of each pair bearing a reference Ground.
  • In addition, there is one additional conductor, which is not used currently.
  • Maximum cable length of 4.5 meters

• Possible cascade of FireWire devices on same bus
