It has been almost 19 years since Microsoft first launched XP Embedded. But what is XP Embedded, and which features are included? In this section, we’ll try to clarify that.

About Windows XP Embedded

Microsoft XP Embedded is the componentized version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional. What does “componentized” mean? It means that both the OEM developer and the end user can take full advantage of Windows XP Professional features and applications—or choose to include only what is required. By selecting only the components needed for the specific application, the developer can reduce the overall storage footprint of the platform.

Features and applications such as the user interface, Internet Explorer, and disk management are represented as components or component sets. Components include all required system files, registry entries, and settings needed for a Windows feature or application to function.

To build and customize your operating system, more than 10,000 components are available. XP Embedded not only enables you to create an operating system exactly the way you want, but also allows you to create your own user interface. For less advanced users, the large selection of components is typically more than enough to build a complete OS—it is essentially “drag & drop”.

In short: XP Embedded is a component-based edition of XP Professional that can be tailored with only the features required for the project.

In addition, there are special features such as Enhanced Write Filter and File Based Write Filter, which can restrict writes to specific areas or files on the disk.
