Mini PCI Express (mPCIe) modules are used to expand the functionality of industrial PCs, embedded systems and compact PC solutions where space is limited. Mini PCIe and M.2 – form factors and key types

In many newer systems, Mini PCIe has been replaced by M.2 sockets. It is therefore important to know the mechanical dimensions and key types when using adapters between Mini PCIe and M.2:

• M.2 2242 / 2260 / 2280
  The four digits indicate width and length in millimetres:

  • 2242 = 22 mm wide, 42 mm long

  • 2260 = 22 mm wide, 60 mm long

  • 2280 = 22 mm wide, 80 mm long

• B, M and B+M key (key notches)
  M.2 modules have one or two notches (key slots) that determine which sockets they can be used in:

  • B key: Typically used for SATA, USB and some PCIe lanes

  • M key: Typically used for NVMe/PCIe x4 solutions

  • B+M key: Combined key so the module fits into both B-keyed and M-keyed sockets (with a limitation on the number of PCIe lanes)

When migrating from Mini PCI Express to M.2, adapter boards are often used that take both the mechanical length (2242/2260/2280) and the correct B, M or B+M key into account. In this way, existing Mini PCIe solutions can still be used in new system designs with an M.2 slot.
