Mifare standarden for RFID blev oprindeligt defineret af Philips i 1994 til brug for berøringsfri elektronisk billettering og blev senere beskrevet i ISO/IEC 14443A standarden for 13,56 MHz berøringsfri smart cards. Derfor er der ikke lagt vægt på stor læseafstand, der typisk er op til 8 cm ved brug af gængse tags og læsere. Mifare bruges bl.a. i rejsekortet i Danmark. Mifare tags har ligesom tags til EM-standarden for 125 KHz en Unik ID (UID) – men har desuden indbygget hukommelse, der lagres i ”sektorer” i taggen.
Mifare teknologien findes i flere varianter:
Mifare Classic er forsynet med 1k eller 4k hukommelse, der er organiseret i sektorer
Mifare UltraLigt har 512 Bytes hukommelse i sektorer – men fungerer ellers som Mifare Classic
MIfare PRO Fungerer som et ”Smart card” med cpu og mulighed for at indlægge et operativsystem i taggen, så det er nok den mest fleksible af Mifare teknologierne. Der er desuden en dedikeret processor indbygget til DES-kryptering, så der er mulighed for at sikre data mod uønsket adgang.
Mifare DESFire understøtter AES-kryptering samt DES- og 3DES-kryptering ved adgang til sektordata i taggen. Derfor kan data med meget høj sikkerhed beskyttes mod uønsket læsning og kopiering. Fungerer som et ”Smart card” med cpu og operativsystem indbygget i et PROM område i taggen, der er optimeret for hurtig læsning af data. Kan bruge UID på op til 64 bits.
