The purpose of a network switch (Ethernet switch) is to connect other network devices to each other.

Good and stable network switches are very important communication devices that allow data communication between different network devices locally and the World Wide.

The network switch handles the flow of data across a network, also called back bone, by only sending a received network packet to the one or more devices to which the package is intended.

Each network device connected to a switch can be identified using the network address, the IP address, so that the switch can control the flow of traffic that maximizes network security and efficiency.

Managed and un-managed switches

There are 2 basic versions of Ethernet switches, the simple ones -managed switches that route data to the ports that the telegrams want. The more advanced Ethernet switches are "managed" switches, where there are a lot of setup options to control and optimize the data flow and, not least, increase data security, also in the context of cyber crime protection. A switch can be built up with up to 7 "layers" which each have their task. For example, layer 3 is for controlling IP multicast (IGMP snooping - for example, video distribution), some router functions, IP routing at VLAN configuration.

The network switch is found everywhere and plays an integrated role in most modern Ethernet local area networks (LANs). Medium and large networks contain a number of managed switches. Small and small systems typically use an un-managed switch or the LAN ports that an Intenet Router is equipped with.

An Ethernet switch can be for both PDS cables (RJ45 cables) and optical fiber cables and many Equipped with ports for both cables.

DANBIT offers a host of different network switches, ranging from PoE Switch to industrial 24-port managed switch with built-in SFP ports. See the great selection here.
