DisplayPort is data-wise different from other forms of digital video. The digital communication is similar to that used in Ethernet, USB and PCI Express. The DisplayPort protocol based on micro-data packets. This allows for higher resolution, expandable without major changes in the physical interface. DisplayPort can transmit audio and video simultaneously or separately. Video signal can be up to 16bit per color and up to 8 audio channels with 24-bit, 192 kHz PCM sound. A semi-duplex channel is data such as VESA EDID, MCCS- and DPMS and two-way USB.
DisplayPort uses LVDS protocol, which is not compatible with DVI or HDMI. DualPort DisplayPort is designed for single link DVI or HDMI (TMDS) with external passive adapter. This adapter converts the signal from 3.3 volts to 5 volts logic. Conversion to analog video VGA/Component/Dual-link DVI requires active adapter. Active VGA converters can be driven directly by the DisplayPort port.
